As track season approaches, freshman Aidyn Horne is already putting in the work at practice, driven by his determination to improve and push through challenges.
“I just think about how good it’s going to make me in the future and all the people that keep me determined,” Horne said.
His determination comes from his competitiveness and the many friendships he’s built through track. That combination is where his love for track comes from.
“I enjoy running with friends, and I’m very competitive sometimes, and track gives me that,” he said.
Although Horne is competitive, he knows how to step up and be a leader for his teammates. He encourages his teammates during practice and sets a good example on and off the track.
“As a freshman, Aidyn is a quiet yet incredibly hard working athlete who gives his absolute best at every practice,” Coach Patrick O’Brian said. “While I am confident he will grow more vocal in the years ahead, he is currently letting his effort, discipline and determination speak for him. He consistently challenges himself by competing alongside more experienced runners and never backs down from that opportunity.”
There are so many great things about track, for Horne. It’s the chance to improve and challenge himself more with every meet that keeps him determined.
“My favorite thing about being on the track team is running and improving after every meet,” Horne said.
While Horne is focused on improving his performance, his coaches are seeing even more potential. Even as a freshman, he is showing qualities that set him apart from the other athletes. According to O’Brian, his intelligence and coachability make him a stand-out athlete and growing leader among his peers.
“Many of the upperclassmen have shared how impressed they are with his grit and determination,” O’Brian said. “He remains composed in all situations and is always willing to listen, learn and apply instruction to improve his times. Aidyn has the potential to develop into one of the best runners at WCHS over the next four years, and we are excited to watch his continued growth.”
Along with his great leadership qualities, Horne has shown his commitment and dedication to his team. He pushes through challenges and sets a good example for his teammates at practice.
“All of the coaches are incredibly proud of Aidyn for showing up to practice each day and never complaining about a difficult workout,” Coach O’Brian said. “He has been running on the [varsity] Gold Squad since the beginning of the season, which speaks volumes about the potential and talent he possesses.”
As his freshman season continues, Horne remains focused on improving every day and supporting his teammates. His determination and leadership are already setting him up for success and a bright future on the track team. His coaches are excited to watch him grow in the years to come.
“When practices become challenging and everyone is tired, Aidyn consistently steps to the line and pushes through,” O’Brian said. “His toughness and quiet determination set the tone for those around him. I remember a few weeks ago when he wasn’t feeling well, yet he still came to practice and gave his best effort. That level of commitment and resilience is special, and it reflects the kind of young man and teammate he is becoming.”
